Someone like You – Lyrics
I heard, that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re, married now
I heard, that your dreams came true
I guess she gave you things
I didn’t give to you
Old friend, why are you so shy
Ain’t like you to hold back
Or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited but I
Couldn’t stay away I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face
And that you be reminded that for me it isn’t over
Never mind I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best
For you too, don’t forget me
I beg, I’ll remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead yeah
You know how the time flies
Only yesterday it was the time of our lives
We were born and raised
In a summer haze bound by the surprise
Of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited but I
Couldn’t stay away I couldn’t fight it
I hoped you’d see my face
And that you’d be reminded that for me it isn’t over
Never mind I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg, I’ll remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead
Nothing compares no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes their memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet
This would taste
Never mind I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don’t forget me I beg, I’ll remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead
Never mind I’ll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
Don’t forget me I beg, I’ll remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love but sometimes it hurts instead

The Story behind the song
“Someone like You” is a poignant reflection on a breakup Adele experienced. She co-wrote the song with American songwriter and producer Dan Wilson, and it became one of the final tracks crafted for her album 21. This song encapsulates the album’s themes, focusing on a dissolved relationship.
Adele has candidly shared her reasons for writing it, saying, “I wrote that song because I was exhausted from being so harsh in songs like ‘Rolling in the Deep‘ or ‘Rumour Has It’ … I was emotionally drained from how I was portraying him. Despite my bitterness and regrets, he remains the most significant person in my life. Writing ‘Someone like You’ helped me come to terms with our two-year relationship. It was liberating.”
Adele described her emotional state during the songwriting process: “I felt quite miserable and lonely when I wrote it, which contrasts with ‘Rolling in the Deep’. That song was about asserting I would be fine without him, but ‘Someone like You’ shows me at my most vulnerable.” She elaborated on the inspiration behind the song: “I can imagine myself at 40, looking for him again, only to discover he’s happy with a beautiful wife and kids, while I’m still alone. The song reflects that fear, and it terrifies me.”
Adele started writing the song on her acoustic guitar after ending an 18-month relationship with a man she thought she would marry. A few months post-breakup, he became engaged to another woman. “We were so intense that I believed we would marry, but he never wanted that with me. Learning he wanted that with someone else was devastating.
Writing the song brought me peace and set me free. I never expected it to resonate globally! I doubt I’ll ever write a song like that again. It’s the song I’ll be remembered for.” She added, “I wrote ‘Someone like You’ at the end of my bed while nursing a cold, waiting for my bath to run. I had just found out about his engagement.
